an old 3 speed Philips frame i got off craigslist for 10 bucks! Guy says he knows its from the 60s, not sure specifically what year. I think Philips was an english brand that got bought by raleigh down the years. anyway, this is a fun coaster brake bike! sometimes its nice to coast, and be able to pull super easy 10 foot skids like you could on your bike from childhood....wheelset is budget fake b43s (origin8 make i believe), some sugino cranks, a well worn used turbo saddle, nitto stem, and some japanese make handlebars (not sure exactly what), some high wearing armadillos (for all those skids lol). some old sturmey archer seatpost. a build consisting of mostly used parts, aside from the peddles and wheelset. it was a fun build to make, but way more fun to ride!
very cool.just laced up a pair of 27 Mavics to coaster hub.AllI need now is a frame to pit ‘em on LOL,can’t wait to bust a skid! enjoy
hey thanks sloman! yah man have fun once you find a suitable frame! skiddddddddddd lol
oh but watch that gear ratio for the skids IE skid patches. most coaster brake hubs seem to have an 18 t cog, so it might be beneficial to have a odd tooth number chainring. u probably knew that lol see yah on MFG ;p
Killing time before I need to leave and came across your ride. I have been thinking about building a townie around a coaster since putting so many together over the summer for the shop. My only question – ill – is you live in NYC right? Do you have enough faith in the coaster for emergency stops? I like this ride a lot. Especially since nearly every bike on this site is a Bianchi Super Pista
hey fede, thanks for checking out the bike!
nope, i dont live in NYC. i live east of San Francisco, Ca. Have ridden this bike in the city, havn’t really needed emergency stopping though.
i assume you ride fixed, well, its about the same as riding fixed without a brake….although i would argue it is easier/quicker to skid to a stop with a coaster brake. mind you, if you have speed, and hit the brakes hard, you will definitely skid for a few feet before stopping.
i sort of take it easy on this ride anyway though, have a somewhat low gearing as opposed to my fixed so im not going too terribly fast on this.
however, coaster brake plus a front brake (which is what i might be doing for my girlfriend’s bike) would be extremely safe
ill, I really like your porch. I would drink a lot of beer out there.
